All standard helix units failed at ~320 ft-lbf of torque with about 0.030" case stretch. All of the low helix sets failed at ~390 ft-lbf of torque with about 0.050" case stretch.

The M20 and M21 have the same cut to the gears, the M22 is a straighter cut resulting in a greater strength. Since the M20 and M21 look the same one way to tell them apart (aside from the grooves on the input shaft) is the tooth count on the cluster gear. There are 7 different input shaft possibilities on a Muncie.
3 Posts. #20 · Aug 18, 2022. Here's some calculated numbers for torque applied to an input shaft. The engine was a 425ftlb Gen2 Coyote sealed crate engine making a low 10sec pass @ 3100lbs. Note that how fast the clutch pulls the engine down has a huge effect on the height of the torque spike.
I would not recommend a Muncie M22 or M21 for any street driven or drag race car. It's simply not the right gear ratios for anything but road racing. The 2.20 low gear is just not low enough. If you want a 4 speed, get a Muncie M20 with a 2.52 low gear ratio. Or a Borg Warner Super T-10 with a 2.64 low gear ratio.

The M22 transmission has a 20 degree helix angle on the gear set as opposed to a 45 degree angle found on the M20 and M21 and were made with a higher nickel alloy. The M21 & M22 is a four speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The M21 & M22 is a Muncie engineering design, this transmission is aluminum case, extension housing and side cover. The side cover has seven bolts and two shift cams. The synchro rings have 35 teeth and the unit has a 4 step cluster gear.

First if the trans is out of the car, look at the input shaft, fine spline or not- no grooves=m22, 1 groove=m21, 2 grooves=m20. An M22 is stronger, but has the same gear ratios. Either one is limited by the case. For a 572, your real deal on the strength required is the traction you can get. I think you at least need to step up to a Richmond 4 speed (iron case) or a Richmond 5 speed, if you want a manual transmission.
The older cast iron T10's are weak. Muncies replaced them in about'63 in Chevys because a stronger trans was needed. The aluminum case Super T10 is a whole different animal. It was brought out around '73 (approx). It is as strong or stronger than a Muncie M22. An NHRA Stock Elim guy I know runs a Super T10.
